In episode #84 of 🎙️The Business Case For Women’s Sports, presented by Ally, we sat down with Laura Waters-Brown, a Director at The Collective at Wasserman, and one of the key leaders behind the #WeAreBG Campaign to bring Brittney Griner home safely.
On February 17, 2022, WNBA superstar Brittney Griner was detained upon her arrival in Moscow.
As of April 29, 2022, Griner was officially classified as a Wrongful Detention by the U.S. State Department, which signals that the U.S. government will seek to negotiate her release.
While Griner was detained, the team at Wasserman (the agency that represents Griner) created the campaign #WeAreBG to lobby support to bring her back home.
Almost 100 Wasserman employees were involved in the effort, and the collective campaign ultimately helped activate thousands to write, call, petition, and advocate for Griner’s release on December 8, 2022.
The campaign has been lauded by the sports industry, and has received recognitions from Hashtag Sports, the Sports Business Journal, PR Daily, and more.
In this episode, hear Laura talk about the work that went into creating the #WeAreBG campaign which ultimately helped sparked a movement to bring Brittney Griner home safely.
